I don't think we talk enough about how the location of a crime can impact its investigation and resolution. Derwin Handy's tragic death on that street corner in the Seventh Ward has stayed with me. It's like the area itself becomes part of the story. I used to live nearby, and I remember the tension in the neighborhood during that time. Even though New Orleans was dealing with rising crime rates, there are people there who deeply care about changing things. But how do you make progress when there's so much fear and distrust around? I can't stop thinking about how the community around N. Dorgenois and Allen Street could have been a tighter ally in finding more answers. It's so critical that neighbors look out for each other and speak up if they saw or heard anything. It's a hard reality, and my heart goes out to Derwin's family and everyone else deeply affected by this case. I hope they find some peace and that we see justice served eventually.
