On the evening of September 2, 2016, 29-year-old David Arzu was walking with three others in Bay Shore, New York, toward the Long Island Rail Road station when two armed men ambushed the group and demanded money and valuables. The other two people in the group escaped unharmed and the shooters fled the scene.

Investigators linked the killings to two members of the Bloods street gang, Lameek Everette and Taheem Smith, with motive described as an attempt to elevate status within the gang. Everette was identified as the gunman; after the murders he posted photos on Facebook showing gang signs and wearing a necklace taken from Arzu. Both men were later convicted; Everette received 40 years and Smith 27 years, and Smith faced an 11-count indictment that included murder in aid of racketeering.
