I was deeply touched while reading about the aftermath of Detective Miosotis Familia's tragic death, especially concerning her children. It’s devastating to think about how her eldest daughter, Genesis, had to step up and care for her younger siblings at such a young age. I can’t imagine the sudden shift from being a sibling to a guardian, all while processing such a profound loss. It’s heartening to see the community and NYPD rally around them, but I’m also troubled by the limitations of the benefits they’re receiving. I had no idea that the current law only supports the kids of fallen officers until they’re 23, and that's only if they’re in school full-time. This just doesn’t seem right. These families have sacrificed so much, and I believe they deserve more comprehensive support. Has there been any progress on the legislation to address this gap? I really hope changes are made soon so that families like Familia’s receive the help they truly need. My thoughts are with all of them.
