Has anyone figured out why there was such a delay in charging Darrin Jones Jr. with Shaquan McMillan's murder? I know he was already in custody for a weapons charge, but it just seems like there should have been enough evidence to connect him sooner. It’s just awful to think about how Shaquan’s family had to wait and endure without answers for so long. It must have been incredibly tough on them. I can’t imagine how it would feel to lose someone like that and then have to go through such a prolonged and painful process just to see justice served. It just makes me wish there were more efficient ways to speed up these investigations so families don’t have to suffer even longer.
I've been thinking a lot about the role of community spaces like Ontario Beach Park in tragedies such as the one involving Shaquan McMillan. Parks are supposed to be places of safety and relaxation, where families and friends gather, and it’s just so unsettling to see such violence happen in a spot that many of us associate with peace and good times.
I can't imagine the trauma for those who were nearby or for anyone who frequents the park—how the memory of that night might linger every time they visit. It's heartbreaking not only for Shaquan's family and friends but also for the broader Rochester community who deserve to feel safe in their public spaces.
It’s just a reminder of how no place is truly safe from the reach of violence and how a senseless act can cast a shadow over places we hold dear. My thoughts are with everyone affected, and I hope we as a community can come together to find ways to better protect our shared spaces.
