I’ve been thinking a lot about the lives impacted by the tragic death of Saleem Merukeb. I can’t imagine the pain his family and friends must be feeling. What sticks with me is the setting of this tragic event—Allen Street, a place so many of us in Buffalo know well and consider part of our everyday lives. It's unsettling to think such a violent incident could happen in a seemingly familiar and safe space. I hope this serves as a wake-up call for the entire community to look out for one another and push for greater safety measures in areas we frequent. My heart truly goes out to Saleem's loved ones during this difficult time, and I hope Jeremy Wright’s guilty plea offers them some semblance of closure, though nothing can ever bring Saleem back.
