Hey everyone,
Been following the Max Stone case for a while now, and something's been bugging me. I know the focus has been a lot on Briones and Ybarra because of the robbery and potential motive, but has anyone looked into the possibility of Max being involved with someone else at the bar that night? Given it was so close to New Year's Eve, I wonder if there were any unfamiliar faces around, maybe travelers or people who don't frequent the area? Back in the '70s, records might not have been as extensive, but maybe there was someone passing through Lubbock who got overlooked.
I also find it interesting that Max had planned to move to Dallas – could this have been more urgent than he let on? Was there something or someone he was eager to get away from in Lubbock? Just a thought. If anyone's come across any details suggesting he might have been looking to leave more abruptly, please share. Sometimes seemingly random pieces of info can shed new light.
Did anyone else notice the peculiar circumstances surrounding the yellow Pontiac found after Max Stone's disappearance? It seems bizarre that Victor Briones was so careless in driving it around, especially considering the high likelihood of getting pulled over—exactly what happened! I wonder if Briones and Ybarra were just desperate or if there was more premeditation involved. Why risk driving around in a vehicle tied to such a serious crime? Also, Briones getting nabbed for drunk driving doesn't make much sense unless they were trying to create a diversion to throw off the investigation. It bothers me how these pieces somehow don't fit neatly together. If anybody has more details on their criminal backgrounds or if they were linked to other crimes, it might help build a clearer picture of their potential involvement. Thoughts?
Has anyone else looked into the timeline around Max Lilburn Stone's disappearance? I find it really strange how quickly his car was found—and the fact that it was driven by Victor Briones the very next day. If Briones and Felix Ybarra Jr. had intentions beyond just taking the car, why risk getting caught by driving under the influence so soon? It seems reckless if they were trying to cover up something more serious. Also, does anyone know if there’s any record of Briones or Ybarra having a connection to Stone? It might explain why Max would have been with them in the first place. The detail about Stone planning to move to Dallas also raises questions. Could someone have known about his plans and seen an opportunity? Any local Lubbock folks here remember more about the case or its impact on the community back then?
