Max Lilburn Stone, a 42-year-old man from Lubbock, Texas, was last seen on December 30, 1976, at a bar on Brownfield Highway. He never returned to his apartment, and all of his belongings, including his paycheck and medication, were left behind. Stone's yellow 1973 Pontiac was found the next day, abandoned and impounded after being driven by a man named Victor Briones, who was arrested for drunk driving. Stone's wallet and identification were also discovered nearby.
The investigation revealed that Briones, along with another man, Felix Ybarra Jr., was last seen with Stone. Both men were later charged with aggravated robbery in connection with Stone's disappearance, and it is believed that they may have killed him in order to steal his car. However, despite the suspicions, Stone's body was never found, and no murder charges were filed. Stone, who had been planning to move to Dallas to improve his health, remained in regular contact with his family until his disappearance.
