Hey everyone, I’ve been thinking a lot about the devastating loss of Sherard Jamie McKoy and how it reflects the ripple effect of gang violence on community and family. I can't imagine the pain his mother, Ivy Bolling, is going through losing her only child like that. By all accounts, McKoy seemed like someone who was committed to positive change in his community, striving to make a better future both for himself and others. I was particularly struck by how easily innocent lives can be pulled into these dangerous situations simply by association. It makes me wonder if there could be more done to educate young people about the ripple effects of their friendships and associations, especially in areas where gang activity is prevalent. Thinking about where we go from here, do you all think schools and community centers are doing enough? Are there programs others might know of that have successfully empowered youth to distance themselves from potentially harmful associations? I believe that change can happen, but this senseless loss is a somber reminder of how urgent the need is for collective action.

I was struck by the fact that Sherard Jamie McKoy was only 18 and had such a bright future ahead of him. It's deeply upsetting to think about how an innocent person could get caught up in something so senseless. He had every reason to look forward to his college years, and it's a real tragedy that life was stolen from him because of a mistaken identity. His mother, Ivy Bolling, spoke about how dedicated and community-minded he was—qualities that undoubtedly would have guided him to do great things. We need to focus on providing more support and safe spaces for young people in these neighborhoods to prevent such tragedies. Rest in peace, Sherard. My heart goes out to Ivy and everyone who knew him.
