On October 9, 2016, 24-year-old Sione Vili Longani was shot and killed in a residential neighborhood in San Bernardino, California, one of many lethal incidents during a year when the city recorded 35 homicides. The death came amid a broader rise in violent crime that authorities and community leaders linked to high rates of poverty and other socio-economic challenges making neighborhoods more vulnerable.
Longani’s killing is listed among several unsolved homicides in the city. Investigators cited a general lack of witnesses and limited cooperation from the community as obstacles to solving cases like his. Local leaders had begun crime-reduction efforts such as Operation Ceasefire to combine community engagement with targeted enforcement, but those initiatives did not prevent this tragedy.
Anyone with information about Sione Longani’s death is urged to contact the San Bernardino police.
