On October 9, 2016, 24-year-old Sione Vili Longani was shot and killed in San Bernardino, California, as part of a broader wave of violent crime affecting the area. San Bernardino was experiencing a rise in homicides at the time, attributed to high rates of poverty and other socio-economic issues that made communities more susceptible to violent crime. In 2016 alone, the city reported 35 homicides, which represented an alarming continuation of an increase in violent crime from previous years.
