On March 18, 2013, 18-year-old Semaj Jamesz Lavender was shot and killed in San Bernardino, California. The incident occurred when Lavender was riding as a passenger in a vehicle entering a gated apartment complex on North Loma Avenue. Gunshots rang out as the vehicle approached the complex, and Lavender was hit multiple times in the upper body.
