I was reading more about the tragic loss of Kelvin Franklin and Mario Shepard, and it just really struck me how the community must have been feeling back then. Two young lives lost in such a senseless manner left a deep scar. It’s hard to imagine the shock and grief that Kelvin’s and Mario's families had to endure when they heard the news. I’ve been thinking about the challenges law enforcement faced during that time. With the spike in violent crimes, the pressure must have been enormous. Arresting McCarty and three others seemed like a pivotal moment, not just for the families directly involved, but for all those in Prince George's County who were yearning for peace and a break in the violence. Gun violence can leave communities feeling like they’re trapped in a cycle without escape. It’s comforting, at least, to see that there was some resolve and swift action by the authorities to try and bring justice for Kelvin and Mario. My thoughts truly go out to their families and loved ones as they continue to navigate life without them.
