Rodney Deron Edwards was 35 when he was shot and killed after an encounter with a Prince George’s County police officer on the evening of December 17, 2011. An officer on patrol, later identified as Corporal Michael Owen, Jr., found Mr. Edwards lying in grass at the roadside. Police say Mr. Edwards brandished a handgun and pointed it at the officer, who then fired and struck him; Edwards was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. The department’s initial finding was that the shooting was a justified response to a direct threat, and no criminal charges were brought in 2011.
Edwards’ family from Landover disputed the police account from the start, insisting he did not have a gun. In January 2020, after Corporal Owen was charged in an unrelated fatal shooting, the State’s Attorney announced a review of the 2011 death. Public attention shifted to the later trial, and no detailed public outcome of the reopened investigation into Rodney Edwards’ death has been reported. Does anyone have information about what investigators found in the review of this case?
