Michelle's case has been such a difficult one to get my head around. I've been thinking a lot about what drew the judge to show leniency towards Donald Bucalo during sentencing. It's hard to imagine being in his shoes, feeling so overwhelmed by the situation he found himself in with Michelle's mental health struggles. I'm sure there are mixed feelings about the decision, but it did bring to light the strain untreated mental illness can place on a family. What struck me the most was hearing about the testimonies from Michelle’s friends and family during the trial. It seemed like Michelle was really loved and that there was a strong desire for her to find peace and healing. From a community perspective, this case is such a powerful reminder of how crucial it is to have access to effective mental health services and support. If only more resources had been available to her, maybe things could’ve turned out differently. It's a tough case that leaves a lasting impact on all those who followed it.
