Hey everyone, I’ve been digging into the tragic events of the Orangeburg Massacre, and one thing that really stuck with me was Delano Herman Middleton's role as both a victim and a symbol of lost potential. Reading about his life, it's clear he was just a 17-year-old high school student with dreams and aspirations like anyone else at that age. It breaks my heart to think about all the life he had ahead of him that was tragically cut short. He wasn’t even an active protestor; he was just sitting on the dorm steps when he was shot. This makes it all the more distressing. It’s important that we remember him and the others not just as victims, but as young individuals who had futures ripped away from them by an unjust system. I'm hoping the more people talk about Delano and keep his memory alive, the more people can understand and feel the weight of what racial violence takes from individuals and communities. Let’s continue to honor his memory by advocating for a world where no one has to face this kind of senseless loss again. Any thoughts or additional information you guys have on Delano would be really welcoming.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the families of Delano Herman Middleton, Samuel Hammond Jr., and Henry Smith, and how they’ve had to carry the pain of losing their loved ones for so many years. It must be such a heavy burden, knowing that justice was never truly served. It’s upsetting to see how little coverage the Orangeburg Massacre receives compared to similar events like Kent State. These young men were just beginning their lives, and their future was stolen from them because others couldn't see past their own prejudices. We owe it to them and their families to keep their stories alive and continue pushing for real change. It's the least we can do to honor their memory.

Has anyone else spent time looking into Delano Herman Middleton's background before the Orangeburg Massacre? I came across a few mentions of him being an avid basketball player, and it's just so tragic to think about his lost potential. It's hard not to wonder what kind of future he might have had if his life hadn't been cut short at just 17. His story, like the others affected by that night, seems to be overshadowed by the chaos of the event itself. It’s really important we continue to share more about who these young people were, beyond just being victims, to keep their memories alive. Does anyone know more about his life or have any insights they can share? Sending love to his family and friends who have endured so much.
