Delano Herman Middleton, a 17-year-old high school student, tragically lost his life on February 8, 1968, during what is now known as the Orangeburg Massacre. This event took place on the campus of South Carolina State College (now University) in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Middleton, along with Samuel Hammond Jr. and Henry Smith, was shot and killed by South Carolina Highway Patrol officers who opened fire on a crowd of unarmed African American student protesters.
