I recently stumbled upon the case of Philip H. Kennedy and one aspect that really caught my attention was the role that societal norms of the time may have played in both the forced marriage and the subsequent trial. I can't help but think about how different things might have been if this had happened today. The intense pressure to conform to certain social expectations seems to have created a tragic situation for everyone involved. From what I've read, the idea of a "shotgun wedding" was taken quite literally here, and it’s heartbreaking to consider the lengths to which families would go to protect their reputation. I wonder how much of Lulu being coerced into marriage played into the jury's final decision to acquit her based on "emotional insanity." It serves as a reminder of how much women’s autonomy over their own lives was restricted back then and makes me reflect on the complexities of justice when emotional and societal pressures intersect. My thoughts are with the families affected even after all these years. This must have been an incredibly difficult ordeal for all of them. It's cases like these that show how critical it is for us to learn from history so that we aren't doomed to repeat the same mistakes.
