I can't stop thinking about the role Dr. P.E. Rutledge played in August Busch Sr.'s final days. It must have been incredibly difficult for the doctor, knowing that administering morphine was likely helping manage the overwhelming pain August was enduring but also realizing there was little more he could do to alleviate his suffering. I wonder how Dr. Rutledge processed what happened afterward, knowing the patient he was trying to comfort had chosen to end his life.
From what I've read, the morphine given to Busch wasn't done with any malicious intent, but rather as a genuine effort to ease his agony—something he had been enduring for months. It puts into perspective the emotional complexity healthcare professionals face when their efforts to help someone are tied to such a tragic outcome. My thoughts are with everyone affected by Busch's death—especially those who knew him personally and professionally. They had to navigate both their own grief and the enormous impact his loss had on so many lives.
