I've been thinking a lot about the gas station attendant who was caught in the middle of this terrible situation. It must've been terrifying to be ordered into the restroom, completely unaware of the chaos unfolding outside. Can't imagine the shock of learning later about the gunfight and the tragic loss of Officer Inlow. I hope the attendant had proper support and counseling afterward. It's easy to focus on the main events, but those who find themselves as secondary victims in such incidents carry their share of trauma. My thoughts go out to everyone touched by this tragic event, directly or indirectly.
I recently came across the tragic story of Officer David Joseph Inlow, and I found myself thinking a lot about Terry Hamilton, the driver of the getaway car. It’s hard for me to wrap my head around how he must have felt during and after that tragic night. Pleading guilty to second-degree murder shows some acknowledgment of wrongdoing. Still, I wonder if he truly understood the magnitude of his actions and the impact on Officer Inlow’s family and community.
Hamilton’s decision to drive that night—what was going through his mind? Was he aware of how dangerously things could escalate, or did he get wrapped up in something that spiraled out of control? It's so sad all around: a choice, a moment, and two lives lost, with so many others forever altered. Justice was served, but it can't bring Officer Inlow back or erase the suffering for those left behind. My heart goes out to his family, who had to navigate such a devastating loss.
