I can't stop thinking about how the whole community of Kirkwood must be feeling after losing Officer Thomas Ballman. As someone who grew up nearby, it’s hard not to feel the impact of such a senseless loss. It's clear that Officer Ballman was dedicated to serving and protecting his community, leaving behind a family who must be going through an unimaginable time right now. At the heart of this tragedy is the harsh reminder of the risks our law enforcement officers take every day. I can't imagine the lasting effects of this traumatic event on those present at the city council meeting, including other city officials and attendees. The bravery it takes to put oneself in harm's way like Officer Ballman did is something I deeply respect. Looking forward, I hope this event spurs changes that will ensure a safer environment for public officials and the officers like Thomas who put themselves in danger to protect others. My heart truly goes out to Officer Ballman's family, friends, and colleagues during such a difficult time. He made the ultimate sacrifice, and his service will not be forgotten.
