I recently came across some discussions about Nasir Ali Smith, and I've been trying to wrap my head around the tragic events that took his life much too soon. It's incredibly difficult to think about how a young life, full of potential and promise, can be cut short. He was just 14, on the path to discovering the world and himself. What's been sticking with me is the choice Nasir had to make to resort to drugs. Many kids get caught up in things they shouldn't because of lack of opportunities or feeling cornered without any other options. It makes me wonder what kind of support systems were in place for him, if any, and if there were ways his community could have better protected or guided him. It’s such a challenging dynamic, and it feels unfair for everyone who knew him and had high hopes for his future. The stories from his friends and loved ones about how fearless and intelligent he was paint a picture of someone who was truly special. My heart goes out to all who knew him. Let's remember Nasir for the vibrant young person he was, and maybe focus on how communities can prevent these tragedies. How do we ensure other kids like Nasir don't slip through the cracks?
