I recently visited the spot on Stadium Boulevard where Nilez was shot, trying to come to grips with this senseless tragedy. It’s tragic to think about the potential life Nilez was stripped of—a young man just stepping into adulthood with dreams of joining the US Air Force. As we discuss these cases, it’s easy to get caught up in the legal outcomes and the criminal processes, but it's essential to remember the human element, the life that was lost, and the family left to cope with their grief. Witnessing the community members who gathered at the site, leaving flowers and notes, was a reminder of how deeply Nilez impacted those around him. It’s important we approach these conversations with compassion and empathy for Nilez’s loved ones, who are enduring unimaginable pain.
