In March of 2019, the life of 43-year-old Chaunti Bryla took a devastating turn, leaving her family and community in search of answers that have been slow to come. Bryla, a resident of Chicago's Avalon Park neighborhood, was last seen on March 14, 2019. A taxi driver dropped her off at her home near 85th and Bennett that day, and she has not been heard from since. Bryla was a mother to an 11-year-old son, and her family insists she would never have abandoned him.
Compounding their concern was the discovery that her bank account had been emptied and there had been no activity on her social media since the day she disappeared. Bryla was also known to suffer from diabetes and high blood pressure, adding another layer of urgency to the search.
The investigation into Chaunti Bryla's disappearance soon uncovered a series of disturbing events that pointed towards foul play. In February 2019, just a month before she went missing, Bryla had allowed Marvin Bailey, the half-brother of her young son, to move into her home after he was paroled from prison. However, after an argument between Bryla and Bailey's girlfriend, Bryla asked him to leave. Investigators believe that sometime between the afternoon of March 14 and March 17, Bailey killed Bryla. Following her disappearance, surveillance footage captured Bailey and an unidentified individual making purchases with cash from Bryla's bank account, which had recently received her income tax refund. Among their purchases were bungee cords, straps, and a dolly.
Further surveillance footage revealed Bailey and his companion carrying a large blue container out of Bryla's apartment building and placing it into a van. The container was later seen on video being thrown into a dumpster at a strip mall. Although a subsequent search of an Indiana landfill, where the dumpster's contents were taken, did not locate Bryla's remains, the blue container was recovered. Inside, investigators found Bryla's DNA. A significant amount of blood was also discovered in Bryla's apartment, inside Bailey's van, and in a hotel room he had checked into. In November 2019, Marvin Bailey was arrested and charged with the first-degree murder of Chaunti Bryla. Despite the charges and the compelling evidence against him, Chaunti Bryla's body has never been found, leaving her loved ones without the closure of a proper burial.
