In the late spring of 1982, Diana Leigh Avera, a 22-year-old mother of two, found herself in a deeply vulnerable situation. After an arrest for disorderly conduct on May 21, 1982, she was involuntarily committed to Searcy Hospital, a state-run psychiatric facility in Mount Vernon, Alabama.
