On June 3rd, two-year-old Colleen Ann Korth, a little girl born into a life surrounded by nature, vanished without a trace from the Coleen River, just outside of Fort Yukon. Named after the very river that would become the site of her disappearance, Colleen was the daughter of Heimo and Edna Korth, a family who had chosen to live a life of subsistence in the remote Alaskan bush. That fateful day, the family was traveling in their canoe when it tragically capsized. In the swift and powerful current, little Colleen was swept away. She was last seen wearing a black jacket, pink pants, and white boots. The family's life in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge was one of both immense beauty and inherent danger. Heimo Korth had moved to Alaska seeking a life of freedom and self-sufficiency, and together with his wife Edna, they were raising their children to understand and respect the powerful nature that surrounded them. Colleen, a child of this wild landscape, was known for her love of exploring the riverbanks and the tundra. Her parents had even tied a bell to her coat to keep track of her wanderings. The tragic accident that claimed her life was a stark reminder of the fragility of life in such a demanding environment. Despite the profound grief of their loss, Heimo and Edna's connection to the land where their daughter's life was cut short remained unbroken. They chose to stay, finding solace and a continued connection to Colleen in the wilderness she had called home. In her memory, her father built a cross which they placed on a hill overlooking the Coleen River. Though her body was never recovered, Colleen Ann Korth is presumed to have drowned in the river. The story of her disappearance is a somber and poignant tale of loss in the heart of the Alaskan wilderness, a permanent scar on the landscape and in the hearts of her family. The case, investigated by the Alaska State Troopers, remains a testament to the unpredictable and often unforgiving nature of the last frontier.
