On a Monday morning, the sixth of March in 1989, 34-year-old Melvin Dennis Washington spoke with his sister by phone from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During their conversation, which took place between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m., he mentioned he was on his way to his mother's house in West Philadelphia to visit his daughters.
