The group was navigating the waters from McKinley Village to Riley Creek, using two canoes that they had lashed together in a catamaran style for stability. The day on the river was drawing to a close as they neared their destination at Riley Creek. As they attempted to pull the canoes from the water, a sudden wave swamped their makeshift catamaran, throwing their plans into chaos. The powerful current of the river immediately began to pull at their waterlogged canoes and precious equipment. While the other four members of the party managed to struggle to the safety of the shore, Ronald, in a selfless act, turned back towards the turbulent water. He was determined to salvage their gear from the grasp of the river. Eyewitnesses from his group reported that they last saw him floating downstream with the submerged canoes, fighting to stay above the surface before he ultimately went under the water. His friends, helpless on the riverbank, could only watch as he was carried away by the swift current. The following day, the search for Ronald began in earnest. The two canoes were discovered wrapped around a bridge abutment at the Jonesville Bridge, the first bridge located north of the entrance to Denali National Park. Despite this discovery, there was no sign of Ronald. He was last seen wearing a black leather jacket and blue jeans. Extensive searches of the area were conducted in the hopes of finding him, but tragically, Ronald's body was never recovered from the river. The case remains a painful memory for his loved ones, a story of a recreational outing that ended in a devastating loss. The official investigation into his disappearance is managed by the Alaska State Troopers, and his case serves as a somber reminder of the unforgiving power of nature in the Alaskan wilderness.
