In the autumn of 1992, 37-year-old Heather Leigh Cook was in Yakutat, Alaska, a remote coastal community known for its fishing and breathtaking scenery. On October 18th of that year, she was last seen aboard the fishing vessel, the Sea Note. The circumstances of that day would lead to a lasting mystery, as Heather, along with the other crew member, vanished into the turbulent waters of the Gulf of Alaska. The day was marked by tragedy as the Sea Note, a 35-foot sea cucumber and urchin dive boat, reportedly rolled and sank just outside of Yakutat. The unforgiving sea claimed the vessel, and Heather was never seen again. Following the sinking of the Sea Note, a search was initiated in the hopes of finding survivors. Tragically, these efforts were in vain. While the bodies of Heather and the other individual on board were not recovered, debris from the vessel was found scattered along a five-mile stretch of beach near the Awke River. This discovery confirmed the grim reality that the Sea Note had been lost to the sea. The Alaska State Troopers opened a case on October 20, 1992, officially documenting Heather's disappearance. She is presumed to have perished in the maritime incident. The disappearance of Heather Cook is a somber reminder of the perils faced by those who make their living on the unpredictable waters of Alaska. The case remains a poignant one, representing a life lost at sea where the ocean holds the final story. Without the recovery of her remains, the full circumstances surrounding the final moments of the Sea Note and its crew remain unknown. The official investigation concluded that Heather was lost at sea after the fishing vessel sank. Her case is a testament to the dangers of commercial fishing in Alaska, an industry that has seen many tragedies over the years.
