In the frigid Alaskan waters of Bucareli Bay, a tragic event unfolded on December 12, 1992, that would forever alter the lives of several families. On this day, 8-year-old Seth Anthony Wade, a young boy with brown hair and brown eyes, was aboard the fishing vessel, the Sea Castle. The boat overturned in the unforgiving bay, located in the Prince of Wales-Hyder Census Area, casting its occupants into the dangerously cold water. This incident marked the last time Seth was ever seen. He was one of eight people on the vessel that day, a trip that ended in a desperate fight for survival against the harsh elements of the Alaskan sea. The chaos that ensued after the Sea Castle capsized resulted in a harrowing division of fates. While four individuals managed to survive the accident, four others were lost to the turbulent waters. Among the missing were Seth Wade, along with Barry Ritter, Aaron Castle, and Sean Castle. A critical and devastating factor in this tragedy was the lack of safety equipment; none of the four individuals who went missing were wearing life vests or survival suits at the time the boat overturned. This absence of essential gear left them exceptionally vulnerable to the immediate shock of the cold and the powerful currents of the bay. In the wake of the vessel overturning, the United States Coast Guard launched a search and rescue operation, hoping to find the four missing individuals. Despite their efforts combing the area, the search yielded grim and sparse findings. Rescuers were only able to recover pieces of wood from the shattered vessel, some styrofoam, and a single jacket that was identified as belonging to one of the other missing children. No trace of Seth or the other three who vanished was ever found. The overview of this case is a heartbreaking account of a maritime accident where the lack of proper safety equipment proved fatal. Authorities and family members were left to conclude that Seth Wade, along with the others, tragically succumbed to hypothermia and were washed away by the relentless waves, a somber end to a search that began with hope but concluded in sorrow.
