On January 15, 1995, 37-year-old James "Jim" Foster was serving as the skipper and part-owner of the F/V Northwest Mariner, a 93-foot steel crab fishing vessel. It was the opening day of the Opilio crab season, and the boat and its six-person crew were in the Bering Sea, approximately 120 nautical miles northwest of St. Paul Island, Alaska. The crew, all from Washington State, encountered fierce weather, with reports of 40-knot winds and 24-foot seas. In the early afternoon, the Northwest Mariner sent a brief mayday call, but the message did not include the nature of the emergency. Other fishing vessels in the area heard the distress call and immediately responded, heading towards the boat's last known position. The overturned vessel was located and identified as the F/V Northwest Mariner. A life raft was found nearby with two crewmen, Bob Peterson and Troy Collins, on board; however, they were unresponsive and could not be revived. The two men were found wearing only light clothing, suggesting they may have been asleep when the incident occurred. An extensive air-sea rescue mission was launched for the remaining four crew members, but they were never found. The search for Jim Foster and his fellow crewmen, Lawrence Johnston, Bruce Forde, and Robert Olson, was eventually called off. The loss of the Northwest Mariner and its crew was a devastating blow to the tight-knit fishing community. A memorial service was held at Seattle's Fishermen's Terminal, where the names of the six men were to be added to the monument for fishermen killed at sea. The exact cause of the capsizing remains unknown, as the vessel was lost and there were no survivors to provide an account. The case remains a painful memory for the families left behind, who were faced with the difficult reality of having no definitive answers and no final resting place for their loved ones.
