On August 27, 1998, Mary Jane Milligrock, an 18-year-old Alaska Native female, disappeared from the area of Nome, Alaska. She was with a group of five other people, setting out on a boat trip across the Bering Strait from Wales, a small city on the western tip of the Seward Peninsula, to the island of Diomede. Mary, who had black hair and brown eyes, was reportedly wearing a blue jacket, blue jeans, and blue tennis shoes at the time she was last seen. The journey they embarked upon was a common one for residents of the region, yet this particular trip would end in mystery, with the boat and all its occupants vanishing. The group traveling with Mary consisted of four other adults and one child, turning this from a single missing person case into a larger tragedy that affected multiple families within the close-knit community. The others who disappeared alongside Mary were identified as Mevlin Edward Kayouktuk, Jason Ozenna, Gene L. Ozenna, Emery Omiak, and 7-year-old Kevin Omiak. Their shared disappearance suggests a sudden and catastrophic event occurred during their sea voyage, but no wreckage or remains of the boat were ever reported as being found, leaving their loved ones with no answers about what happened in the waters between Wales and Diomede. The investigation into the disappearance of Mary Milligrock and her companions was opened by the Alaska State Troopers. With no witnesses to the boat's journey and a lack of physical evidence, the case has remained unsolved for decades. The official circumstances simply state that Mary was last seen on the boat, and no further contact was ever made. The overview of this case is one of profound and lingering loss for the community. Six people, including a young child and a teenage woman just at the start of her adult life, disappeared without a trace, leaving a void of information and unanswered questions that persist to this day.
