In the late summer of 1999, Maria Bozi, a 46-year-old Romanian-born British citizen, began a new life in the United States with her husband, David Kent Fitch. The couple, who had married in England in April of that year, settled in the Lakeshore Trailer Village near Boulder City, Nevada, part of the Lake Mead National Recreational Area. Bozi, a beautician by trade, had left her home and adult son in London to embark on this new chapter.
Her last known contact was a phone call on September 4, 1999, to the caretaker of her property in England. After that call, she was never heard from again. Her failure to maintain her usual communication with family and friends quickly raised concerns about her well-being.
Shortly after Bozi's disappearance, her husband, David Fitch, did not report her missing. Instead, he offered conflicting stories about her whereabouts, telling some that she had gone to Vancouver, Canada, and others that she had returned to Romania to visit her mother. In mid-September, Citibank alerted authorities to a series of $1,000 withdrawals from Bozi's bank account, all occurring in Henderson, Nevada, beginning on September 7th. This suspicious financial activity prompted an official investigation into her disappearance. Further investigation revealed that Fitch had disposed of most of her belongings, including her car and clothing.
In February 2000, a significant break in the case occurred when Fitch was stopped for a speeding violation in Henderson while driving Bozi's Ford Thunderbird. A search of the vehicle and two storage units he maintained revealed firearms, ammunition, and books about changing one's identity and methods of killing. Authorities also discovered documents with Bozi's forged signature. While Fitch was never charged with her murder, a judge, during his sentencing for bank fraud and other charges, stated there was 'clear and convincing evidence' that he had killed her. Fitch received a 22-year prison sentence for these crimes. Despite extensive investigations and the strong suspicions surrounding her husband, Maria Bozi's body has never been found, and her case officially remains an unsolved disappearance with foul play suspected.
