On July 13, 2003, 18-year-old Christopher Stephen Ostler, a male from Juneau, Alaska, boarded a private flight for what was intended to be a fishing trip. The plane, a Cessna 401 operated by his father, Gary Ostler, was en route from Port Angeles, Washington, to Gustavus, Alaska, with five passengers on board. This journey, however, would end in tragedy, leading to a desperate fight for survival in the frigid waters of the Pacific Ocean and the disappearance of Christopher and three others. He is now presumed to be deceased. The flight encountered critical trouble as it neared its destination. The pilot had bypassed opportunities to refuel, and as they approached Gustavus, he reported to air traffic control that the plane was out of fuel in both engines. This forced an emergency ditching in the open ocean, about 12 miles from the intended airport. The impact with the water was severe, causing the occupants to momentarily lose consciousness. According to the two survivors, when they awoke, the plane was rapidly sinking. In the chaotic moments that followed, four of the six people on board, including the pilot, managed to exit the sinking aircraft. The remaining two passengers were unable to escape and went down with the plane. The four who made it into the water began a desperate swim towards the nearest shoreline, which was about a mile away. During this arduous swim, the group became separated. Two of the individuals eventually made it to shore and were rescued. Tragically, Christopher Ostler and his father, Gary Ostler, did not. The bodies of Christopher, his father, and the two other passengers who were lost, Adam and Gordon Moses, have never been recovered. The National Transportation Safety Board later determined the probable cause of the accident to be the pilot's failure to refuel the airplane, leading to fuel exhaustion and a total loss of engine power. The case stands as a heartbreaking example of a recreational trip turned to tragedy due to critical errors in judgment, leaving families to grapple with the permanent absence of their loved ones.
