On June 17, 2010, Jason Daniel Allgood, a 36-year-old man, was reported missing in Haines, Alaska. He was a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer and had planned a solo subsistence fishing trip on the Chilkat River on his day off. Allgood had shared his plans with a friend and also posted about his fishing trip on his Facebook page. Concern for his welfare grew when he did not report for his 7 a.m. shift the following morning. This initiated a search for him, leading to the discovery of his vehicle and some of his belongings. The search for Jason Allgood began after he was reported missing, with Alaska State Troopers leading the effort. His 2005 Kia Sedona van was located on the south side of the Chilkat River, downstream of the Wells Bridge. Not far from his van, searchers found his backpack next to a staked subsistence net. Inside his backpack were his wallet, digital camera, and tennis shoes. Footprints at the scene indicated that Allgood had changed into green chest waders and walked along the river's edge, even wading through waist-deep water to get to his fishing spot. A significant and troubling clue was that there was only one set of tracks leading to the area, with none returning, which suggested he had not left the location on foot. Despite extensive search operations involving Alaska State Troopers, fire crews, volunteers, riverboats, and a helicopter, no trace of Jason Allgood was found. The search efforts covered the area between his fishing site and 17 Mile, and searchers even used probes and grappling hooks in the challenging waters where the rivers converge, an area known for its dangerous currents. The search was temporarily halted at one point but resumed after a report of hip boots seen floating in the river. The overview of this case is that Jason Allgood vanished while tending to his fishing net on the Chilkat River. Key items such as his backpack, boots, and fishing net were found on the riverbank, but extensive searches have been unsuccessful in locating him.
