On September 7, 2012, 31-year-old Angela Chingliak, a female from Bethel, Alaska, vanished into the waters of Goodnews Bay. She was aboard a 20-foot, flat-bottomed boat with her two brothers-in-law, Rick Ross and Sam Pavala, transporting donated food from a fish processing plant in Platinum to their village, a twelve-mile journey. The vessel, designed for river travel with low sides, was not suited for the ocean-like conditions of the bay. That day, a strong west wind combined with an outgoing tide likely created rough waters that swamped the boat. As the boat was sinking, one of the men managed to make a distress call via a cell phone, prompting a search and rescue operation. Tragically, the search that ensued led to the recovery of the bodies of Rick Ross and Sam Pavala from the water. However, despite the efforts of rescuers, Angela Chingliak was nowhere to be found. The boat they were traveling in was later discovered submerged in ten feet of water, approximately four miles from Platinum. At the time of the incident, it was noted that the vessel was likely not overloaded, but its unsuitability for the bay's conditions played a critical role in the tragic event. Angela was last seen wearing dark rain gear and a dark-colored life jacket. She is described as a Native American female with black hair and brown eyes, and she has a tattoo on her left ankle. The disappearance of Angela Chingliak is a heartbreaking loss that has left a lasting impact on her community. Although her body has never been located, she is presumed to have drowned in the tragic boating accident that claimed the lives of her two brothers-in-law. The Alaska State Troopers investigated the incident, but the case remains a painful memory of the dangers that can be present in the Alaskan waters. The overview of this case highlights a devastating maritime accident where a vessel ill-suited for the conditions was overcome by rough seas, leading to the loss of three lives, with one individual, Angela Chingliak, remaining missing.
