In the crisp autumn of 2019, the life of 36-year-old Jessica Lopez, a beloved former substitute teacher from Newburgh, New York, took a tragic and permanent turn. She was last seen in the early morning hours of November 3, 2019, at the Windsor Motel in New Windsor, where she was staying with her on-and-off boyfriend, Matthew Mercado. Concern mounted when Jessica, also known to some as Yessica, failed to make contact with her family and friends. The alarm grew when her silver 2005 Toyota Camry was discovered abandoned in the parking lot of the Showtime Cinemas on Route 300 in Newburgh. Jessica was a woman with distinctive features, including a scar on her head and another on her right ankle, along with tattoos of a red rose on the back of her neck and the words 'Y Loca' on her lower left leg. Her sudden and unexplained absence cast a dark shadow over the community, sparking a desperate search for answers.

The investigation into Jessica's disappearance quickly focused on Matthew Mercado, who was with her in the motel room on the morning she was last seen. Just days after her disappearance, on November 6, 2019, Mercado was arrested on unrelated burglary charges for an incident that occurred at the same motel. A year later, while still in custody, the investigation took a significant step forward when he was charged with the second-degree murder of Jessica Lopez. Prosecutors alleged a grim sequence of events, believing that Jessica was the victim of a domestic violence homicide. They contended that in the early hours of November 3, as Jessica attempted to leave their motel room, Mercado restrained and killed her. Following this, he is said to have methodically erased text messages between them, disposed of her cell phone, and used her debit card to withdraw $1,500 from her bank account just hours after her death.

In a significant development in August 2022, Matthew Mercado pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and tampering with physical evidence in connection with Jessica's death. He admitted to providing her with a fatal combination of drugs and failing to seek medical help when she had a severe adverse reaction. Mercado confessed to removing her body from the motel room, placing it in the trunk of her car, and disposing of it in a dumpster in Newburgh. Despite this confession and subsequent searches of a Pennsylvania landfill where the contents of the dumpster were taken, Jessica's remains have never been found. In February 2023, Mercado was sentenced to a total of 16 to 19 years in prison for his role in her death. The case of Jessica Lopez is a heartbreaking narrative of a vibrant life cut short. A former educator who had left her career to care for her ailing father, she was remembered by the District Attorney as a 'remarkable young woman' whose loss was deeply felt by her family, friends, and former students. The investigation, a collaborative effort involving multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Town of New Windsor Police, the City of Newburgh Police, the New York State Police, and the FBI, pieced together the final tragic hours of her life. Although a conviction was secured, the inability to recover her remains leaves a painful void for her loved ones, a lasting testament to the cruelty of her final moments.
