On November 12, 2019, 59-year-old Daniel Martin VanCleave went on a fishing trip on the Chetco River in Brookings, Oregon, and did not return. His wife reported him overdue when he failed to come home before sunset, prompting an immediate search. That evening, authorities located his truck and boat trailer at the Brookings Boat Basin. Later, a Coast Guard aircrew spotted his 16-foot boat, unlit and with its engine still idling, about 1.7 miles south of the Chetco River Jetty. Onboard the otherwise empty vessel were his cellphone and other personal belongings. An extensive search was launched by the U.S. Coast Guard, involving multiple air and water crews. The search efforts included an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew, a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Chetco River, and land-based searches along the beaches. The search parties combed the area for over 22 hours, but they found no sign of VanCleave. After 14 separate searches yielded negative results, the Coast Guard made the difficult decision to suspend their active search efforts. Daniel VanCleave is described as a white male with brown hair and blue eyes, standing 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing around 220 pounds. He has several identifying physical characteristics, including crippled fingers on his right hand, scars on his stomach, and tattoos on his left shoulder, left arm, and right shoulder. At the time he went missing, he was believed to be wearing a blue t-shirt, blue jeans, black suspenders, a camo hat, and brown shoes. The case remains an active missing person investigation, leaving his family and community without answers. The circumstances of his disappearance are centered on him being reported overdue from a fishing trip, the discovery of his unmanned boat with personal items still on board, and the fact that exhaustive searches were unable to determine his whereabouts.
