On a summer day in June 2020, a 24-year-old Indonesian student named Vincent Renaldo Djie, who was living in Seattle, embarked on a solo hike in the vast wilderness of Mount Rainier National Park in Washington. On June 19th, he was last seen on the Van Trump Trail, heading towards Mildred Point. He was reportedly wearing a red t-shirt, which he may have had off at the time, black sports shorts, and Merrell Moab 2 hiking shoes. He carried a blue drawstring backpack and might have been wearing a black baseball cap or an earth-toned bucket hat. Having hiked the Alta Vista Trail at Paradise the day before, Vincent was familiar with the park's trails. When he failed to return home as expected, concern grew, and he was reported missing, marking the beginning of a distressing search in the rugged terrain he was last seen exploring.
The alarm was officially raised on June 20th when Vincent's sister, unable to reach him, contacted the Pierce County Sheriff's Office. A 'Be On The Look Out' alert was issued for his vehicle, a black 2014 BMW, which was soon discovered at the Longmire Trail Head within the national park. This discovery prompted a large-scale search and rescue operation involving Mount Rainier National Park rangers and volunteers from the Tacoma Mountain Rescue. For days, teams scoured the area, using ground crews, canine units, and aerial searches, including helicopters equipped with Forward Looking Infrared Radar to detect any heat signatures. The search efforts were hampered by dangerous late spring conditions, including unstable snow bridges over creeks and steep, hazardous terrain. Despite the extensive and dedicated search, no trace of Vincent was found.
The days turned into weeks, and the active search was eventually scaled back, leaving friends, family, and investigators with no answers. Vincent Djie, a motivated young man who was described as responsible and team-oriented with a master's degree in Business Administration, had vanished. He was known to be bilingual in English and Indonesian.
