Barbara Joe Kelley, a 17-year-old from Fortuna, California, was last seen on June 17, 1950, when she went out with her 28-year-old boyfriend, Henry “Red” Baird. The couple did not return home that evening. The next morning, Baird's body was discovered on a beach at Table Bluff, south of Eureka, California. He had been shot in the back of the head and was found naked except for his shoes and socks. Nearby, his clothes were folded, and Barbara's clothing was hidden beneath them.
However, Barbara herself was missing, with only her shoes and stockings unaccounted for.
Barbara's case remained unsolved, with various theories about her fate. In 1963, a man named Gayle Patrick Irish confessed to the murders of both Barbara and Baird, claiming he had abducted Barbara after killing Baird. However, despite his detailed confession, Irish was never charged due to a lack of physical evidence, including an inability to locate Barbara's body in the area he claimed to have buried her.
