Thomas Mylon Gronewold, a 19-year-old seasonal worker for the U.S. Forest Service, went missing on August 7, 1966, while floating down the Kootenai River near Libby, Montana. Gronewold and his friends were enjoying a day on the river using inner tubes when they encountered rough waters. He was thrown from his inner tube, resurfaced twice, but then disappeared beneath the water. His friends attempted to reach him but were unsuccessful.
