In the late afternoon, a 58-year-old man from Japan named Yosuke Haga, who was on vacation with his family in Hawaii, expressed his desire to take a walk and watch the sunset. His family dropped him off at the south end of the parking lot adjacent to the Maui Prince Hotel in Makena. He was last seen walking toward the hotel with the intention of viewing the sunset.
