In May of 2014, 54-year-old Maria Quinones-Garcia vanished from her home in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She was last seen on May 17, 2014, walking away from her residence on the 300 block of Chew Street. At the time she went missing, she was reportedly wearing a gray shirt and possibly white capri pants. Her family had experienced her leaving for extended periods in the past, and she had previously been located in shelters in New York City. However, this time was different, and as days turned into weeks and then years, her whereabouts remained a painful mystery for her loved ones. Her home in Allentown was situated near the Lehigh River, a detail that would become significant as the investigation into her disappearance unfolded over the next decade.
The case took a turn in May 2017 when a resident discovered a human foot, still inside a sock and shoe, near the Delaware River in Pohatcong Township, New Jersey. Despite this discovery, no other remains were located, and for years, traditional DNA testing was unable to yield a positive identification, leaving investigators with few leads. The case grew cold, and the identity of the person to whom the foot belonged remained unknown. The location of the discovery was noteworthy, as the Lehigh River, which flowed near Quinones-Garcia's home, empties into the Delaware River close to where the remains were found.
A breakthrough finally came in 2023 when the New Jersey State Police partnered with the Ramapo College Investigative Genetic Genealogy Center. Students in the program took on the cold case, using bone remains to develop a genotype profile which was then uploaded to genealogy databases in the spring of 2024. Through their dedicated research, which included analyzing the DNA evidence and even researching the victim's footwear, the students were able to identify Maria Quinones-Garcia as a possible match. This lead was confirmed after her children provided their DNA for comparison, bringing a tragic end to the decade-long search. While the identification has brought answers to her family, the full circumstances surrounding her death remain undetermined. The resolution of this case stands as a testament to the advancements in investigative genetic genealogy and the collaborative efforts of law enforcement and academic institutions in bringing closure to the families of the missing.
