In the small, remote village of Chevak, Alaska, the disappearance of 35-year-old Dennis Adrian Slats in March 2021 has left a community searching for answers. Slats, along with 22-year-old James Tikiun, was last seen on March 7, 2021, at an old, abandoned school building in the village. The circumstances of their disappearance are deeply intertwined with a fire that completely destroyed the same building just a day later, on March 8th. Following the fire, searches of the village were conducted, but there were no signs of the two men, nor any indication that they had left the community. The investigation into the disappearance of Dennis Slats and James Tikiun was immediately complicated by the fire that ravaged their last known location. In the early morning hours of March 8, 2021, a fire broke out and quickly consumed the old school building. Alaska State Troopers and Deputy Fire Marshals arrived in Chevak on March 9th to investigate the cause of the fire and to search the debris for any signs of the missing men. However, the search for human remains was initially unsuccessful due to the large size of the structure. The investigation into the fire's origin determined that it started underneath the gym, though the cause remains unknown. A thorough search of the site was further hampered by the presence of hazardous materials, including asbestos, and a heavy snowfall the day after the fire. The disappearance of Dennis Slats and the concurrent fire have had a lasting impact on the community of Chevak. Not only did the fire destroy a building that held hopes for a future community center, but it also left the community grappling with the uncertainty of what happened to two of its members. The fire also caused significant damage to the village's infrastructure, disrupting power and damaging a sewer line, which left about 20 homes without running water and sewer for a period of time. As of now, the case remains an open investigation, and the community continues to hope for answers and closure. The official circumstances of disappearance simply state that Dennis and James Tikiun were last seen at the old abandoned school building which burned to the ground the following day, and searches for them have been unsuccessful.
