In the late spring of 2021, a sense of unease settled over a family in Valrico, Florida, with the disappearance of 21-year-old Kelly Vazquez. On the morning of May 23, 2021, Kelly returned to the home she shared with her grandmother. She mentioned she had been at the Seminole Hard Rock casino the previous night and intended to go out again, assuring her grandmother she would be back in a few hours. After gathering some clothes, she left with a man she was dating.
Her family did not know that this would be the last time they would see her, marking the beginning of a long and painful period of uncertainty.
Later that day, Kelly had a video call with a friend who was out of state. During the call, she was at a Walmart with two men. Kelly told her friend she might return to the casino, but the call was abruptly cut off. She followed up with a text message, explaining her poor cell service was because she was in "the middle of nowhere." The following day, a text from Kelly's phone to her grandmother stated she was on her way home, but Kelly never arrived. Soon after, her phone appeared to be turned off. In a strange turn of events in June 2021, an individual came forward with Kelly's two iPhones; however, the phones had been reset, wiping them of any information that might have provided clues to her whereabouts.
For years, the family and community held onto hope, as law enforcement and private search parties looked for answers. The investigation led detectives to focus their search efforts on Keysville, a rural area near the Polk County line. The painful mystery stretched on until September 25, 2023, when the Polk County Sheriff's Office discovered human remains. It wasn't until March 2024 that those remains were positively identified as Kelly Vazquez, bringing a heartbreaking conclusion to the search. The Hillsborough and Polk County Sheriff's Offices are now investigating her cause of death.
