He and his friend Virgil Bonham were last seen at 12:30 p.m. that day, stopping at a service station before heading to the lake. They planned to return by 5:00 p.m., but neither of the men was ever seen again. Their 12-foot fiberglass boat was found adrift and fully functional in the middle of Folsom Lake around 3:00 p.m., but both men had vanished. Their vehicle was discovered in the parking lot, with personal belongings such as their wallets, clothes, and money left behind. Only their cigarettes and lighters were missing, as both men were known to be heavy smokers.
Despite favorable boating conditions that day and the fact that both men were excellent swimmers, authorities believe Tittel and Bonham may have drowned. However, no trace of their bodies was ever found. The case remains unresolved, with their disappearance considered highly suspicious due to the absence of clear evidence.
