Annie Laurie Hearin, a 73-year-old socialite from Jackson, Mississippi, was abducted from her home on July 26, 1988. She was married to Robert Hearin, a prominent businessman involved with the company School Pictures, which had sued several franchise owners in the 1980s. Annie had hosted a bridge party earlier that day, and after her guests and housekeeper had left, she disappeared. Her husband returned home around 4:30 p.m. to find her missing, but her car was still in the driveway.
A ransom note was found in the house, demanding Robert make payments to 12 people associated with School Pictures. Blood smears were discovered near the front door, suggesting that Annie may have been injured during the abduction. Witnesses reported seeing a white van with Florida license plates in the area around the time of the incident. Days later, a letter supposedly written by Annie herself was sent to Robert, pleading with him to follow the kidnappers’ demands.
Robert complied with the ransom request, sending nearly one million dollars to the 12 individuals mentioned in the note. However, despite these efforts, Annie Hearin was never found. In 1989, Newton Alfred Winn, one of the franchisees involved in the School Pictures lawsuits, was arrested and later convicted of conspiracy to commit kidnapping, extortion, and perjury. Despite his conviction, Winn maintained his innocence, and Annie’s body was never recovered. She was declared legally dead in 1991.
