On the night of February 18, 1998, Steven Lance Brown, a 41-year-old deckhand for the Washington State Ferries, vanished into the cold waters of Puget Sound. He was working aboard the ferry Tacoma during its run from Seattle to Bainbridge Island when he disappeared. Just a few minutes into the trip, Brown was reportedly asked to head to the second mate's office. He was last seen walking up a flight of stairs on the vessel and was never seen again.
