In the early summer of 2021, 65-year-old Lester Youngs Whitmeyer was in Oregon visiting his son and family. On June 18, while in the Oakridge area, he spoke with a family member and mentioned he was planning to go to the McCredie Hot Springs, a series of natural geothermal pools located in the Willamette National Forest. This was the last time he was seen or heard from. Whitmeyer, who had connections to the Redmond area, was a white male with gray hair and brown eyes, standing approximately 5'10" tall and weighing around 200 pounds. He often wore a beard and glasses and was distinguished by a large tattoo covering his entire back that depicted a centaur holding an eagle. After not hearing from him, his family grew concerned, and on July 2, 2021, Lester Whitmeyer was officially reported as a missing person to the Lane County Sheriff's Office. An investigation was launched, and authorities eventually located Whitmeyer's vehicle in the Willamette National Forest, east of Oakridge. His personal belongings were found inside the vehicle, but disturbingly, it had been stripped of some of its parts before being discovered. The discovery prompted a search of the surrounding area by the Lane County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team, but despite their efforts, they were unable to find any clues that would lead them to Whitmeyer's whereabouts. For some time, the circumstances surrounding Lester Whitmeyer's disappearance remained a mystery, and his case was classified as an unsolved missing person investigation. The lack of information left his family and community without answers. Regrettably, according to his official case file, the search for Lester Whitmeyer has concluded, as he has been located and is now deceased. While this brings a sad resolution to his missing person case, the specific details regarding the date, location, and circumstances of his discovery have not been publicly released. The case began with a man setting out to enjoy a natural landmark while visiting loved ones and transitioned into a perplexing search after his vehicle was found abandoned, ultimately ending with the sorrowful confirmation that he had passed away.
