Jose Tobias López Mejía, a 27-year-old Salvadoran national, went missing on August 4, 2021, in Falfurrias, Texas, shortly after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. His last known contact with his family was on August 3, 2021, when he sent a text informing them that he and others were heading into the desert. On August 4, another migrant reported to his family that José had passed out, and the smuggler they were traveling with abandoned him in the desert en route to Houston.
