In the early spring of 2022, a young man named Erwing Omar Rodriguez Lopez, at the age of 21, vanished under harrowing circumstances. On March 9, 2022, he was last seen in the border city of Eagle Pass, Texas, a location that would become the focal point of his family's search. Erwing, a Hispanic male with brown hair and brown eyes, stood between 5'7" and 5'9" and weighed approximately 130 to 140 pounds. His loved ones last saw him as he attempted to cross the formidable Rio Grande. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance are distressing, as it is believed he may have drowned in the river's strong currents. While the Eagle Pass area was the primary location mentioned, the city of Laredo was also noted in connection with his last known whereabouts, adding a layer of uncertainty to the search efforts. Erwing was last seen wearing an orange zip-up jacket over a blue t-shirt that had an orange and yellow graphic design on the front. He was also wearing white sweatpants and a pair of white and black Nike tennis shoes with white soles and the iconic white swoosh. He carried a black backpack which held his very dark blue Samsung A31 cell phone and his Nicaraguan ID card. His physical description notes several distinct features that his family hoped would aid in his identification. He had a small congenital defect on his left ear, a tiny piece missing. He also had a keloid, or raised scar, on his abdomen, a mole in the middle of his forehead, another on his chin, a mark on his lower back, a scar on one of his middle fingers, and a skin condition on his arms and legs. These details paint a picture of a young man whose life was abruptly interrupted. The investigation into Erwing's disappearance is being handled by both the Maverick County Sheriff's Department and the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office. The initial report was filed with the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office on June 22, 2022. The case has been entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) under case number MP92470. The official circumstances of his disappearance state that he was "last seen crossing the Rio Grande. He is believed to have drowned in the river." The search for Erwing has been a heart-wrenching ordeal for his family, who are left to grapple with the unknown. The vague nature of his last known location and the perilous conditions of the river crossing have made the search for answers incredibly challenging, leaving a void of information and a family desperate for closure.
